My Love Affair with Good Buns!

Updated: Oct 18, 2023

I don’t think that you are human if you can resist the universal love for good-looking buns! I mean how can you deny those soft, round, firm, bouncy, warm, delicious….BUNS! Now, I don’t know where your mind drifted off to but I am talking about this guy down here.

Father of all buns

Now, you might look at this picture and think to yourself,” What’s the big deal? It’s just a bun”. This is not just any bun but it is a special kind of bun that is only sold at PappaRoti. This is “Pappa Roti” which can be translated as the father of all buns. PappaRoti is a franchise that began in Malaysia in 2003 by a woman who wanted to bake the ultimate bun for her son. There is nothing like the food that a mother makes for her children and PappaRoti successfully shares this love with the rest of the world.

I happened to visit PappaRoti by chance when I was roaming the Express Avenue Mall in Chennai. After the usual tiring ordeal of window shopping, my sister and I wanted to have a good cup of coffee and talk as all sisters do. Nothing like a hot cup of java and laughing about absolute rubbish! This is how we stumbled across the secluded in-dining area of PappaRoti which is located on the first floor of the mall. I remember finding it peculiar that there was a separate menu filled with an assortment of buns and beverages. I was intrigued and decided to order the Signature bun with a cappuccino. This was the moment in time when my addiction began.

Let me describe the taste of these buns that were served fresh out of the oven on this rustic paddle-looking board! Imagine a thin crusty exterior that is flaky and hard but easily breaks when your teeth bite into it. Beyond the crust is the lightest bread that you will ever taste a mild sweetness. The texture of the bun is moist but not wet and the air within the bun itself makes it light and fluffy. So, when you bite into the bun, it gently collapses like a demure maiden taking a graceful bow. At the center of the bun is a warm dollop of salted butter that is melting in real time from the steam trapped within the bun. The combination of these elements is so well balanced that it will lead you to moan publicly in orgasmic delight, without any shame for the innocent kid looking at you with wide eyes or the parent who looks disgusted.

Look at that coffee art!

Now, the only reason that I go to PappaRoti is for the bun and the coffee. The franchise does serve a wide array of foods that are fresh and delicious but I will always return for the buns. The only setback that I have experienced is that the buns quickly go out of stock because of the high demand leaving me in a depressed haze.

The second is that there are a few PappaRoti stores in India which are located in Delhi, Bangalore, Gurugram, Noida, Srinagar, and Chennai. If you are passing by these cities, make sure to try this bun at least once because it will change the way you look at buns forever!
